Georgia is known for being relatively warm, but that doesn’t mean we don’t experience occasional cold snaps during the winter. When the weather cools, it’s essential to take care of your nasal health to prevent issues like cracked skin and nosebleeds.
Let’s look at a few ways you can keep your nose hydrated and healthy this winter.
Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water, juice and herbal tea helps keep the tissues in your nose from drying and cracking. Aim to drink at least eight cups a day, more if you spend a lot of time exercising.
Wrap Up
If you’re headed to Grant Park for a snowball fight or taking a day trip up the mountains, loosely wrap a scarf over your nose and mouth to humidify the air you breathe. You can also wear a ski mask for an easy option that stays put.
Use a Humidifier
Running a small humidifier on your nightstand while you sleep helps keep your nasal tissues hydrated. If you don’t have a humidifier, try taking a long, hot shower with a towel under the door to trap the steam in.
Blow Your Nose Gently
You need to be extra careful when blowing your nose when the skin is dry and prone to bleeding. Hold one nostril closed and gently blow into a tissue. Repeat on the other side. If you’re still congested, try a nasal irrigation kit to loosen mucus without stressing the sinuses.
Don’t Scratch
Dry tissue may feel a little itchy, but it’s crucial not to pick or scratch at it. Instead, apply a small amount of petroleum jelly or lotion to the base of your nose. Avoid placing the product inside the nose.
Try Nasal Sprays
Use saline nasal sprays if the skin inside the nose feels dry or tight. Nasal sprays are especially helpful if you have a winter cold and frequently blow your nose.
Treat Sinus and Nasal Issues Early
If you develop a sinus infection, cold or flu, early treatment is crucial in preventing unnecessary nasal dryness and nosebleeds. Cold and flu medications are effective at minimizing your symptoms. If you’re prone to sinus infections, we may recommend a Balloon Sinuplasty or Functional Nasal Endoscopy to reduce their recurrence.
Approximately 60% of people will experience at least one nosebleed in their lifetime. If dry tissue and bleeding are plaguing you this winter, contact ENT of Georgia North today to discuss more prevention and treatment options.
