Nasal congestion is a common symptom of colds, allergies and sinus infections. While it may seem harmless, congestion can cause discomfort and interfere with daily activities like smelling or enjoying your favorite Saints + Council meal. Blowing the nose is an easy method for clearing mucus, but doing so too forcefully can result in pain in the ears. This discomfort arises because the ears and nose are connected.
How the Ears and Nose Are Connected

The ears, nose and throat connect through a small canal called the Eustachian tube. This structure regulates pressure in the middle ear and allows fluid to drain from the ear into the throat. When you blow your nose with excessive force, the sudden increase in pressure travels through the Eustachian tube into the middle ear. This can strain delicate tissues and, in some cases, lead to a perforated eardrum.
Proper Technique for Blowing the Nose
To protect the ears, you should clear your nose gently. Start by holding one nostril closed with your finger. Then blow gently through the other nostril into a tissue and repeat on the other side.
The key is to use light pressure. If gentle pressure is not effective, additional methods may assist in relieving congestion:
- Saline irrigation. A Neti pot or squeeze bottle filled with warm saline solution can help flush mucus from the nasal passages. Tilt your head slightly so the solution flows in one nostril and out the other, reducing the need for forceful nose-blowing.
- Steam inhalation. Moist heat from a shower or a bowl of hot water can loosen mucus and hydrate nasal tissues, making it easier to clear the sinuses.
- Decongestant medications. Over-the-counter decongestants provide short-term relief but should not be used for more than one or two days to avoid rebound symptoms.
When To Seek ENT Care
If congestion persists beyond several days or ear pain increases, an underlying condition like allergies or sinus infection could be the culprit. In these cases, it’s essential to seek ENT care.
