With EoE, the esophagus (part of the canal that connects the throat to the stomach) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/eosinophilic-esophagitis#:~:text=Eosinophilic%20esophagitis%20is%20an%20allergic,in%20reaction%20to%20an%20allergen.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">becomes inflamed, does not properly contract and develops with rings or abscesses<\/a>. This condition arises when the immune system makes white blood cells called eosinophils in reaction to an allergen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EoE is usually caused by an allergic reaction to environmental or food allergens. The symptoms include heartburn, trouble swallowing, abdominal pain, vomiting and more. While EoE can occur on its own, it is a greater chance of developing if you also have atopic dermatitis, asthma or food or environmental allergies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can EoE Be Managed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An allergist or gastroenterologist can help identify the cause and triggers of EoE and its symptoms. Two treatment options for EoE include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Avoidance<\/strong>. An allergist may perform a scratch test to identify which allergens you will need to avoid. Knowing which allergens trigger your EoE will help you devise an allergen avoidance plan. For instance, if your EoE is triggered by certain foods, you may go on a special diet. If your EoE is triggered by pollen, you will want to avoid walks through Grant Park during high pollen-count days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Corticosteroids<\/strong>. Swallowing small amounts of corticosteroids may be helpful in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/conditions-treatments\/related-conditions\/eosinophilic-esophagitis#:~:text=Corticosteroids%2C%20which%20control%20inflammation%2C%20are,of%20swallowed%20corticosteroids%20are%20available.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">minimizing the inflammation of the esophagus<\/a> during EoE flare-ups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Regular doctor\u2019s appointments<\/strong>.
