Allergies are an incredibly common condition affecting millions of Americans. According to the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America, “in 2018, approximately 24 million people in the U.S. were diagnosed with seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever). This equals around 8% (19.2 million) of adults and 7% (5.2 million) of children.”

With statistics like that, it’s a sure bet you know someone (probably quite a few people) with allergies! When it comes to hosting an event with friends and family, let’s go over a few steps you can take to make them more allergy friendly.

Consider The Venue

For people with seasonal allergies, indoors is probably better than outdoors for reducing exposure to pollen. Ideally, places with bare floors as opposed to carpeted ones. If you’re hosting an event at your home, make sure to have recently vacuumed and have the windows closed to minimize pollen in the house.

If the Event Is Outdoors

Springtime in Georgia is beautiful to behold, and certain activities require an outdoor venue. However, if you’re holding a party somewhere outside, like Bessie Branham Park, you should make sure to note that well in advance so that potential attendees with allergies can take medications beforehand to prevent symptoms like nasal congestion and watery eyes from getting in the way of them of having fun!

Certain outdoor areas may be better than others in terms of pollen count as well. Areas next to a body of water like a lake or river might be preferable. You can also see if the area has a hard surface or can provide a temporary one (like a portable dance floor for an outdoor wedding) to prevent attendees from kicking up potential allergens.

Don’t Forget About Food Allergies

It’s not just seasonal allergies that you have to keep in mind when it comes to hosting an event for lots of people. Food allergies are common as well, some of which can cause severe symptoms, including airway problems and even anaphylaxis. Ask attendees about any potential food allergies, and if it’s a potluck type event make sure to inform everyone coming to not bring dishes with certain ingredients to make sure the food is safe for everyone.
