About 60 million people in the U.S. experience symptoms each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Symptoms of Hay Fever?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms of hay fever may be short-term or long-term. Short-term symptoms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Runny\/stuffy nose.<\/li><li>Sneezing.<\/li><li>Itchy, red, watery eyes.<\/li><li>Postnasal drip.<\/li><li>Cough.<\/li><li>Sinus pain\/pressure.<\/li><li>Itchy nose, throat and mouth.<\/li><li>Itchy skin.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some symptoms can last days or weeks, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Clogged ears.<\/li><li>Sore throat.<\/li><li>Decreased sense of smell.<\/li><li>Headaches.<\/li><li>Dark circles\/puffiness under the eyes.<\/li><li>Fatigue.<\/li><li>Irritability.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Causes Hay Fever?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Allergies, including hay fever, occur when your body overreacts to a substance that is usually harmless, known as an allergen. When your body exposed to an allergen, the immune system releases antibodies called Immunoglobulin E (IgE) in order to fight off the \u201cintruder.\u201d IgE then tells your cells to release histamine, which increases mucus production and triggers inflammation. This is what causes your allergy symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common hay fever allergens include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Pollen.<\/li><li>Dust mites.<\/li><li>Pet dander.<\/li><li>Cockroaches.<\/li><li>Mold and fungus spores.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have allergies in the early spring, you\u2019re likely allergic to tree pollen; if you have them in the late spring and summer, you\u2019re likely allergic to grass pollen; and if you have them in the fall, you\u2019re likely allergic to ragweed pollen. If you have symptoms year-round, you\u2019re probably reacting to indoor allergens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Are Allergy Symptoms Managed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, there is no cure for allergies. However, there are ways to manage symptoms. For example, you can take over-the-counter medications, like a daily antihistamine.
