How Is Obstructive Sleep Apnea Treated?

Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea is defined as a lack of airflow for 10 seconds or more during sleep, or successive periods of less than half-normal breath for the same period of time. Sleep Apnea decreases oxygen levels during sleep & can result in mood swings, lack of concentration & reduced energy levels.

Sleep Apnea increases the risk of developing hypertension & cardiac & pulmonary disease. Gone untreated, it can be associated with an elevated risk of stroke, heart attack & cardiac rhythm abnormalities.

Snoring & Sleep Apnea in Adults

In adults, snoring is more often related to nasal obstruction from septal deviation, allergies or excessive tissue in the throat which vibrates (this can be due to excessive weight). Alcohol consumption, certain medications & sleeping on your back can also be causes of Sleep Apnea in adults.

Snoring & Sleep Apnea in Children

In children, the most common causes of Snoring & Sleep Apnea are enlargement of the tonsils & adenoids or nasal airway obstruction, usually either from an upper airway blockage or allergies.

Many pediatric Snoring & Sleep Apnea patients respond very well to the removal of enlarged tonsils & adenoids. Depending on the age & health of your child, removal can now be done as a simple outpatient procedure.
